Traditional Indian Clothing: The Classic Clothing of India

Indian clothing has made its way into mainstream society, as saris are considered stylish all around the world. The traditional clothes, however, must not be forgotten. They are a part of the Indian culture and need to be respected. India was the first country to produce cotton, so many of their traditional garments are made from cotton.

The sari, as mentioned earlier, is a clothing item for women. It is a lengthy cloth that is made of either cotton or silk. Saris are wrapped around a woman in a certain fashion that is stylish and secure. Almost, any woman can fit in a sari because of the looseness of its design. They come in many different colors, the most common colors being red, blue, green and orange.

The traditional male counterpart for the sari is called a dhoti. This is also a cotton cloth that is often colored white. Dhotis are usually also made into a pant-like clothing, wrapped around a man's legs.

Another item of traditional Indian clothing that has really made it into the modern consciousness is the turban. This is the headwear commonly worn by Indian men. It is also a cotton cloth that is wrapped around the head to form a sort of covering.

The whole appeal of the women’s clothing is to bring out their femininity and make them appear like goddesses to be worshipped. Because of this, you will often see women with many accessories to complement their clothing. Earrings, nose rings, bracelets and other colorful items are usually a part of traditional female Indian costume.

The male clothes are designed to be comfortable. They are also of the right thickness for the Indian climate.
