Traditional Native American Clothing

Native American tribes are spread all across North America. Each tribe is known to have a very specific costume or clothing.

The headdresses and ornaments that Native Americans wear are an important part of their culture. In the mainstream culture, they are known for these specific trademarks. Many of these tribes traditionally used organic materials from nature, like animal skins and plant material, to construct their outfits.

A common article of clothing that was worn in many tribes is the breech cloth. A breech cloth is a rectangular cloth that is connected to a belt and covers your front region and your backside. Another common item that many Native Indians wore is leggings. They wore these to keep their legs well-covered, warm and protected.

The women of these tribes often wore dresses constructed out of deerskin. In certain Indian tribes, including the tribe of the Iroquois Indians, women wore tiaras on their heads.

It was also common in tribes for chiefs to wear more detailed and elaborate clothing, as well as a lot more accessories. For example, they may have had extra feathers on their robes or extra bells on their footwear.

The common item of clothing that many tribes wore on their feet was moccasins. These are made of leather and fur and are very comfortable and warm.

Although these types of Native American clothing are traditional, they are still sold commercially. They come in different sizes to fit any member of the family. These can be found in clothing specialty stores and also on the Internet.
